★★★★: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World by Edgar Wright

I don't think any director has ever adapted a comic book to screen in such a ridiculously enjoyable way as Edgar Wright did in Scott Pilgrim. Everything that makes the original medium so loveable-- the fluid transitions, the nonlinear concept of time, the interactivity, the bright colors and loud sounds, the humor that's simultaneously extremely childlike and entirely inappropriate, the feeling of losing yourself in an entirely different world-- are all perfectly translated to screen, and so much of the praise must be awarded to Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss, whose editing is beyond masterful. Movies don't always have to be deep and serious to be good, and that's what Edgar Wright proved by making Scott Pilgrim. To be fair though, while this definitely holds up on second viewing, you do get kind of worn out by how strong the stylization is, kind of like when you eat something too sweet. Also, I refuse to believe Chris Evans is in this.
